The Mercers’ Company is a Livery Company of the City of London. With a rich history dating back over 700 years, it is focused on being a philanthropic force for good and philanthropy is at the core of its past, present and future. Our Heritage Team cares for archival records, object collections and artworks, using this heritage to inform, educate and inspire Members, staff and visitors.

The Role

We are looking for a Collections Manager to join our small Heritage Team and support the delivery of the Company’s Heritage Strategy. You will manage the acquisition, documentation, care and interpretation of our collections, oversee loans and conservation requirements, and develop engaging exhibitions and displays for our new education and engagement spaces and throughout Mercers’ Hall.

Key areas of responsibility:

Collections Management and Documentation

  • Accession, catalogue, document, pack and store a wide range of object collections, ensuring that fragile, complex and high-value objects are handled and housed in accordance with recognised museum and conservation standards.
  • Take responsibility for retrospective collections documentation projects, improving the quality, consistency and accessibility of collections information.
  • Identify and address gaps in accessioning and cataloguing, ensuring that all collection items are appropriately documented, recorded and managed.
  • Update annual insurance valuations of objects and collections on the CALM catalogue.

Exhibitions and Displays

  • Plan, develop and deliver a programme of exhibitions and displays, including major exhibitions on a cyclical basis (approximately every three years) and smaller, regularly changing displays within the Company's education and engagement spaces.
  • Advise on the selection, display and movement of heritage objects and artworks throughout Mercers' Hall, ensuring that environmental conditions, security and conservation requirements are appropriately considered.
  • Develop interpretation for heritage objects and artworks on long-term display throughout Mercers' Hall and 6 Fredericks Place.
  • Audit, monitor and manage all incoming and long-term loans, ensuring compliance with loan agreements and maintaining accurate records, documentation and environmental data.

Preservation and Conservation

  • Undertake regular condition surveys of collections and heritage objects at Mercers' Hall and at other locations for which the Company has responsibility or provides collections care support, identifying conservation risks and recommending appropriate preservation measures.
  • Contribute to Disaster Recovery planning and procedures.
  • Work with and deliver the objectives set out in the Conservation Management Plan.

Other responsibilities

  • Provide expert guidance and practical support to the Apprentice in completing their final project to reorganise, rehouse and document the works on paper collection in the plan chests.
  • Support education, learning and outreach programmes through collections research, content development and the delivery of activities and events, including talks, workshops and small displays as well as articles for Company publications.
  • Regularly assist the Heritage Manager in providing regular reports to the Heritage and Arts Committee.
  • Supervise and support researchers as required.

The Ideal Candidate

You will have experience of working with varied collections and a strong track record in delivering exhibitions, displays and engaging heritage interpretation. You will bring excellent interpersonal skills and experience of managing research projects to agreed deadlines and budgets, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

You will have a degree or postgraduate qualification in museum studies or collections management, or equivalent qualifications or experience.

This is an exciting opportunity to bring the Company’s rich heritage to life and help shape exhibitions and displays for others to experience.
