As of 18 September 2026, 8 institutions with at least 3 postings on CuratorSearch stated pay on every one of them: Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, Deutsches Museum, München, Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, Walker Art Center, The Broad (Los Angeles), Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart, Stuttgart, Yale Center for British Art. Across the sector, 28% of the 875 postings on record stated a salary.

How is the Museum Pay Transparency Index calculated?

For every institution with enough postings on record, the share of those postings that stated a salary — an explicit figure, or a public-sector pay grade that maps to a published table. A posting counts once, whether open or closed. Nothing is estimated or inferred from titles; every figure is a count of the institution's own advertisements. Free to cite under CC BY 4.0.

Method

A posting states pay if it gives an explicit amount or names a public-sector pay grade that maps to a published salary table. Each posting counts once, open or closed; the archive keeps every advertised salary after the listing ends, so the index grows rather than churns. Aggregator rows without an identified employer are counted in the sector figure but not ranked.

The Index is recomputed on each request from the same records as /salaries and the Hiring Index.
