M+ Graduate Internship

M+ Museum (Hong Kong) · Hong Kong

M+ offers internships to graduates and emerging professionals with intake once a year. The year-long internship is full-time and paid. We seek creative and driven individuals who are interested in working in a collaborative environment where their voices and decisions will make a lasting impact.

Our interns are mentored by key museum staff from departments across M+, including Curatorial, Collection and Exhibition, and Museum Operations. In addition to gaining valuable insight into museum work, interns have the opportunity to grow their professional network from attending meetings, workshops, and off-site visits.

If you are looking to pursue a career in museums or the cultural field, or want to learn more about twentieth- and twenty-first-century visual culture, we encourage you to apply.

About the Internship

Every year, interns are placed in various teams across the museum to work alongside some of the world’s leading museum professionals. Under the guidance of a mentor, interns gain experience in the various phases of developing museum exhibitions and programmes. They also assist with the research and care of the

M+ Collections

. The professional and theoretical training is designed to develop individual strengths and interests while exposing interns to the wide-ranging operations within the museum.

Since 2012, the M+ Internship has supported the growth of the next generation of cultural practitioners. Former interns have gone on to find success in the cultural field as curators, archivists, educators, and beyond.

Affairs

Curatorial interns gain hands-on curatorial and exhibition-making experience. Mentored by one of our curators, they assist the Curatorial department on M+ exhibitions and public programmes centred around the museum’s three main disciplinary areas of design and architecture, moving image, and visual art, as well as the thematic area of Hong Kong visual culture.

Digital

Content

Digital team interns learn about the ways museums engage their audiences through different digital touchpoints. They gain practical experience in storytelling, audience engagement, and developing digital platforms. Mentored by the Digital Content team, the intern will assist in video content development for the M+ Magazine and social media platforms.

Editorial and Publishing

Publishing interns gain hands-on experience in the full production process of books and other print publications related to M+ Collections and exhibitions. Mentored by the team, the intern will be involved in the process of research, content planning, and coordination of M+ publishing projects.

Learning and Interpretation

Learning and Interpretation interns take part in shaping the museum’s programmes and displays that aim to build lasting relationships with its audiences through visual culture. Mentored by Learning and Interpretation curators, interns will explore the different ways museums can encourage active participation in different audience groups and assist in creating and enriching experiences and accessible content at the museum.

Collection and Exhibition Department

Collection, Archives and Library

Collection management interns gain the opportunity to learn about the management, care, and preservation of the wide range of objects and materials in the M+ Collections. They can learn the core processes involved in using, building, and maintaining a contemporary art, design, and moving image collection for different purposes. Interns work in one or more of the following collection management areas: archives and library, registration, database management, and rights and images.

Exhibition Design

Design interns gain an understanding of how design can shape the environment of the museum and the ways in which visitors experience and learn about our collection. Mentored by one of the M+ designers, interns will work with the Design team in conceiving, developing, and executing design projects for a range of exhibitions and museum departments.

Museum Operations Department

Commerce and Visitor Services

Interns from the Commerce and Visitor Services teams gain hands-on training and commercial experience in a museum setting. Mentored by professionals from the Museum Retail and Commerce team, Retail Management interns will assist in upcoming projects and tasks in areas of retail and e-commerce operations and development. Visitor Services interns, on the other hand, will assist in daily visitor services operation, including engaging visitors, collecting feedback, allocating manpower, and monitoring service standards under the supervision of the M+ Visitor Services Operation Manager. They will also manage the Information Desk, cloakroom service, and related administrative work in frontline operations.
