Counts of postings, never estimates; most museum postings state no pay at all.

The National Museum’s Conservation and Restoration unit is seeking a conservator for a 2-year project, focusing on recent wood conservation within the museum, with a focus on church furnishings and furniture.

Work areas

You will be part of a team of conservators with many specialties. Your main responsibility will be the conservation and documentation of wooden objects, furniture, and interiors, as well as the dismantling and assembly of interiors in historic buildings and churches. The tasks also include preventive conservation. The work is part of the unit’s revenue-generating business.

In addition, there may be tasks within the National Museum’s own exhibitions, involving work with installations, exhibition care, and possibly in our magazines.

Qualifications

We expect you to have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in conservation from a recognized educational institution or equivalent. In addition, we will emphasize that you have the following:

  • Practical experience with the conservation of wooden objects or knowledge of traditional craft techniques within carpentry or furniture making
  • Experience with the conservation of cultural and historical objects that are still in use. Specific experience with church furnishings is desirable, but not a requirement
  • Experience with pest control, treatment of fungally infected wood and stabilization of decayed wood, including the conservation of wooden objects exhibited outdoors
  • Experience with budgeting and time management
  • Good teamwork skills
  • Driving license (B)

Wage and employment conditions

The National Museum must have the opportunity to assess a criminal record for private use prior to employment.
