Job Posting: Part-Time Clay TechnicianLocation: Drawing Room Williamsburg (In-Person)Position Type: Part-Time Clay Technician$20–$22 per hour, based on experience.Benefits include unlimited access to Drawing Room’s weekday Open Hours, with staff discounts on our Art Library, discounts on snacks & merch, as well as priority event/workshop volunteering opportunities.This role is set to begin in July/Aug.About the Role:Clay Technicians support daily studio operations by firing and maintaining kilns, managing materials, tools, and our clay library, glazing and assembling pieces, and coordinating with students and instructors.What You’ll Do:Kiln Maintenance and Operations: Load, unload, and operate the kiln on a consistent, weekly schedule, with flexibility to be available for extra necessary firings.

Making sure all student and studio pieces are fired safely and efficiently with care and the kiln is maintained and in proper working condition.Glazing: Glaze ceramic pieces and painted bisqueware made by workshop students and members, ensuring high-quality results as well as mixing, maintaining, and testing new glazes.General Cleanliness and Inventory: Keep the clay library stocked, organized, and in good condition to meet the needs of the studio and students. Floor cleaning, sink cleaning, and maintaining a tidy and welcoming environment.

Logging and processing pieces: Own the clay log and its orderly function.Process Improvement: Strong time management skills and can identify areas of improvement in processes, operations, and workflows, and provide recommendations to enhance efficiency and quality.Team Collaboration and Support: Maintain clear, proactive communication with studio staff and instructors to ensure smooth daily operations, align on firing schedules, and address studio needs.Student Communication: Email workshop participants to notify them when their completed pieces are ready for pickup and provide customer service.Production and Assembly: Handbuild bisqueware for and complete post-firing assembly for specific class projects.Physical Requirements: Must be able to regularly lift up to 50lbs without assistance.What We’re Looking For:Hands-on experience with ceramics, including glazing, glaze mixing, kiln operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety.Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.Ability to manage time effectively and meet firing schedules.Excellent communication skills, especially via email.Proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement.A collaborative, team-oriented attitude with a willingness to support fellow staff and a passion for fostering creativity in others.A love for ceramics with a strong personal practice.Compensation & role details:$20–$22 per hour, based on experience.
