We are seeking an Exhibit Developer & Writer to join our exhibit design team. In this role, you will craft the ideas, narratives, and written content that bring museum and visitor-experience exhibits to life—translating research, client goals, and audience needs into compelling stories that guide design across two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and digital media. You will work closely with the rest of the exhibit team and clients throughout each project phase, from early concept development through final content delivery to create experiences that are accessible and engage multiple senses.
Our studio is a small, creative, and collaborative firm where graphic designers, 3D designers, and exhibit developers work collaboratively. We craft memorable exhibit experiences for museums, interpretive centers, and public land agencies including National and State Parks across the country.
All members of the team must develop a clear understanding of each phase of the design process and are expected to broaden their technical understanding through continued exposure to exhibits and similar venues. We are a mission-driven office that also places a high priority on work-life balance.
Your Responsibilities
Develop core exhibit content deliverables, including the Big Idea, audience analysis, visitor experience goals, purpose statements, exhibit narratives, content outlines, and final exhibit text.
Apply knowledge of exhibit media techniques and interpretive design best practices to create content-driven concepts that engage visitors effectively.
Conceptualize and communicate content across exhibit forms—digital, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional—partnering with the relevant design teams to ensure content is reflected accurately and effectively in each medium.
Shape communication to audience needs and decide on the voice and tone used throughout deliverables.
Conduct interpretive planning efforts, including Participate in and help facilitate engagement with the planning and design team throughout each project phase.
Travel as needed to project sites; facilitate workshops and presentations with client team to define and refine purpose, mission, themes, audience, and management goals.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., museum studies, writing, communications, English, interpretation, or a similar discipline), or equivalent professional experience.
Demonstrated experience writing content for exhibits, museums, visitor centers, or a comparable interpretive or storytelling environment. Preferably 5-10 years of previous experience.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt tone and content for varied audiences and formats.
Working knowledge of interpretive planning principles and how content connects to audience experience.
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-disciplinary teams, including designers, specialists, and clients.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple content deliverables across concurrent project phases.
Preferred, but Not Required
Experience with project management, including managing schedules, budgets, and client communications—candidates who can demonstrate PM experience are of particular interest.
Experience collaborating with 2D design teams on content style, patterns, and visual hierarchy.
Advanced degree or certification through the National Association for Interpretation (NAI), such as the Certified Interpretive Planner (CIP) program.
Experience coordinating with subcontractors or external partners on content-related deliverables.
Compensation negotiable based on experience.
Please provide a portfolio demonstrating breadth, creativity, and proven experience in telling compelling stories through interpretive exhibits, including multiple samples of your interpretive writing. Please indicate your specific roles and contributions for each project submitted as part of the portfolio.
