Preparator (Casual)Salary transparent

The Preparator position installs and prepares artworks for exhibition and transport, including, packing, unpacking, framing and crate-building.  This position provides guidance and support to Preparator Assistant staff

Duties & Responsibilities

Packs and unpacks all exhibitions relating to in-house and out-of-house programs in accordance with current museum standards.

Performs set up and take-down duties, including the installation of traditional artworks and new media works and the installation of appropriate display and lighting equipment. Expedites object move requests and records changes of location.

Provides direction to others by assigning tasks, allocating work, clearly communicating what is required to get the job done, provides guidance in work methods and procedures

Constructs temporary walls, furniture, mounts and other exhibition elements as required

Performs the Gallery’s required framing, as required.

Performs authorized refurbishing and minor restorations.

Constructs crates and packing cases, and other storage solutions.

Performs regular visual inspections and maintenance of art storage areas, dusts and lightly cleans objects as needed according to standard museum best practices.

Coordinates the storage and retrieval of all crates, packing cases and materials

Researches products and materials, purchases and maintains supplies, materials and tools required for installations.

Assists in periodic inventories as required

Transports art works to and from various exhibiting centres and lenders.

Maintains a clean and orderly environment in all work areas, ensuring that tools, materials and equipment are properly stored; maintains the cleanliness of cases, frames etc.

Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees in accordance with the

Saskatchewan Employment Act,Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of methods of display and installation of exhibition art.

Knowledge of gallery environmental standards including appropriate lighting methods.

Knowledge of matting and framing methods.

Knowledge of care, handling, and storage of artworks in accordance with museum standards.

Demonstrated ability to perform carpentry as related to duties of position.

Ability to find creative solutions for unusual exhibition installation requirements.

Ability to work in an organized and careful manner under time pressure.

Physical ability to perform the assigned duties.

Degree in related field.

Three years’ recent (within the last five years), related experience handling and installing artworks in a museum or art gallery.

Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence.

Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.

Safe Driver Orientation – training provided upon hire

Possession of Forklift certification – training provided upon hire

Possession of valid first aid/ CPR certification – training provided upon hire

Possession of WHMIS certification – training provided upon hire

Possession of Fall arrest, scaffold, rigging, scissor and articulating lift certification – training provided upon hire
